NCEA Level 3 Geography
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mrs J. Grey
Geography at this level is varied and stimulating. It involves students in theoretical and practical studies. Students will develop a large range of skills and learn how to apply these in various contexts. This subject is an accepted prerequisite for a broad range of tertiary courses.
There are two external achievement standards to choose from and a selection of internal achievement standards. Students may investigate the Lake Taupo environment to discover why it is shaped the way it is in AS 91426. The other external achievement standard, AS 91429, is an extension of skills and big ideas learned over the level 1 and 2 courses and these are applied to a context. Internal achievement standards include investigating a global current issue such as human trafficking, looking at the global pattern of coral reefs and the research of a local issue or pattern.
A student will be withdrawn from a standard if the teacher is not confident that the achievement of the standard is within the reach of the student or there is no evidence of the student attempting the assessment.
Recommended Prior Learning
Students need not have taken geography at Years 11 or 12 but it is an advantage.
A minimum of 14 achievement standard credits in Level 2 English or Geography, which must be a combination of internal and external standards, or by negotiation with the teacher in charge of Geography.
