Course Description

This is a one semester course aims to introduce students to basic Te Reo and Tikanga Māori.
Some of the topics covered are:

  • Mihimihi/Pepeha (basic introductions and greetings).
  • Whānau (family).
  • Kāinga (home)
  • Tikanga me ngā kawa o te marae (marae customs and marae protocol).
  • Haka & waiata.



Course Overview

Semester A
This karaehe (class) gives ākonga (students) the opportunity to learn Ngāti Tūwharetoa marae tikanga (protocols) in a practical manner. Ākonga will learn to pōwhiri (welcome) manuhiri (visitors) with haka pōwhiri, waiata and haka from Ngāti Tūwharetoa. Ākonga will also learn to manaaki (care for) their manuhiri in the wharekai through kaupapa Māori hospitality.
In a One Semester Course ākonga will also learn basic mihimihi (greetings), and how to kōrero (speak) and tuhi (write) about basic topics such as whānau (family) and kāinga (home).

Semester B
