Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr R. Gregory.
Year 11 History concentrates on 20th Century history as a means of helping students better understand their world and their place in it. A variety of topics will be chosen from the selection below.
1. Conflict in the Middle East: This conflict continues and is seen in the media weekly. This theme helps the student understand why this conflict occurred and why it continues.
2. International Relations: We look at how nations conduct their foreign policy, the results of such policies and how the lessons of the past influence the decisions of the future. This course is designed to make use of the extensive media resources available to the 21st century historian.
a) Origins of World War II 1919-1941.
b) New Zealand Foreign Policy 1945- 2015.
3. Social Change: Black Civil Rights in the USA 1950-1970: A topic which has relevant interest to the Black Lives Matter movement and interesting comparisons to NZ.
4. Research Topics: Different research topics are chosen from year to year, depending on the student’s interests and global issues. The course is designed to learn and develop a range of skills, which can be used in a wide variety of courses and careers to enhance the student’s knowledge base as well as providing an interesting subject with as many questions as there are answers.
A student will be withdrawn from a standard if the teacher is not confident that the achievement of the standard is within the reach of the student or there is no evidence of the student attempting the assessment.
Recommended Prior Learning
Recommendation from the Year 10 social studies teacher.
A good ability in reading and writing is required to cope with the texts and the compulsory written assessments. The recommendation is a student should be eligible for 11 En 1 or 2.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
Ring binder, 14B8 A4 refill, subject dividers or 2B8, highlighters.
A personal device is preferred for this subject.
