Year 10 Drama

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms V. Gowdy.

This is a practical and theory-based course in both classroom and stage drama where students build confidence, teamwork and leadership skills within the framework of creative play. No experience is necessary, but courage to try something new is essential and full participation is obligatory.
Students explore the following while developing their knowledge of: The history of theatre, in-role improvisation, stage craft, Greek theatre form, New Zealand theatre form, scene devising, script work, movement, voice and role.

  • Developing practical knowledge – using drama elements and conventions to create drama.
  • Developing ideas – improvisation, drama creation.
  • Communicating and interpreting – performing in role.
  • Understand drama in context – theatre styles.


Course Overview

Semester A
Term 1: Students will learn the origins of theatre looking at GREEK THEATRE form. You will learn the features and structure the Greeks created and how to use these to shape an existing story into a dramatic performance.
The end goal is to perform a devised drama based on a Greek Myth.

Term 2: Students will learn how:
- New Zealand theatre form has different features from Greek
- to use Drama Techniques to shape characters (i.e. using their voice, body, movement and use of space to become someone else)
- to work with a script
- to use their voice, body, movement and space to realize the intention of a playwright
The end goal is to perform a scene from a New Zealand play.

Semester B

1B5 exercise book. Additionally, there is a schoolwide expectation that all learners bring their laptop on a daily basis to support their learning.

Pathway

DRAMA adds TRANSFERABLE SKILLS to ALL CAREER PATHWAYS.
Among many other things, students will learn to perform under pressure, work in a group to achieve practical goals and support others in the group to achieve at the same time.
Students learn to OBSERVE and ANALYZE people and the world around them in order to learn from their stories.
Drama creation operates in the HIGHER THINKING ORDER SKILL LEVELS (Blooms Taxonomy) and students are required to learn CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING and TIME MANAGEMENT skills in every lesson.
