Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr J. Thiele

This course caters for students who are interested in a future career in Carpentry, Building, Joinery or the Furniture industries and can further lead onto a career in quantity surveying, project management or contract management. Students are able to earn nationally recognized unit standards at level 3 while completing a range of different practical tasks. Students will have the opportunity to be involved in the construction of two small buildings which are built to the relevant council codes of practice. The course is delivered in conjunction with the Building and Construction Industrial Training Organisations of New Zealand.


Course Overview

Term 1
Undertake a Stage 3 BCATS project.

Follow safe workplace practices, and contribute to a health and safety culture, in a BCATS environment.

Term 2
Select, use, and maintain tools, equipment and machinery for a Stage 3 BCATS project.

Communicate and work collaboratively in a Stage 3 BCATS project.

Term 3
Incorporate other building, construction and allied trades into a Stage 3 BCATS project schedule.

Measure and calculate for a Stage 3 BCATS project.

Term 4
Develop and use BCATS project documentation for a Stage 3 BCATS project.

Manage first aid in an emergency situation
Provide first aid
Provide basic life support

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Subject charges will be supported by STAR funding. Students are expected to provide all materials for individual projects.


Recommended Prior Learning

NCEA Levels 1 and 2 technology is an advantage, or 12927 (Hand Tools), and 24350 (Portable Power Tools).
