This course is 100% internally assessed and works alongside The Waikato Institute of Leadership and Sport Science (WILSS).

This course invites students who are enthusiastic about sports and sport leadership

The course builds on the basic concepts covered in Level 1 PE and begins to develop leadership and communication skills within the practical setting of sport and active recreation. However, these is still an element of classroom work that is needed to be completed to be successful.

It also include a practical assessment as part of the performance standard - The sport/activity will be decided based on the experience and knowledge of the student group.

A student will be withdrawn from a standard if the teacher is not confident that the achievement of the standard is within the reach of the student or there is no evidence of the student attempting the assessment.

Please note that students can only choose 2 courses from Physical Education. These include: Health, Physical Education, Sport and Recreation and Outdoor Education.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students will show leadership both in the classroom and in a practical context. Students will be expected to apply their newly found skills, in a practical context as they plan and practice 2 beginner level coaching sessions for their chosen sport.

Students will also develop their individual skills through Turbo Touch. Through a range of drills and practices students will start to form ideas of their performance and begin to self and peer assess.

Term 2
Students will develop their own training program through the use of a variety of biophysical principles. Having the freedom to train independently motivated the students enabling them to train off-site and therefore demonstrating their understanding through their own personal experiences. Seeing improvements in their fitness levels and with specific examples from their own experience, supports them to evaluate the effectiveness of their program and discuss changes/modifications they could make to improve their training.

Term 3
Students will return to the coaching unit in the classroom and in a practical context. Students will be expected to apply their newly found skills, in a practical context as they complete a beginner level coaching session for their chosen sport.
