Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

It is preferable for students to have taken this in year 9 or 10, or recommendation by teacher.

This course covers topics such as interpreting nutritional information and needs, safe food handling, cultural influences on our food.  All assessments involve both theory and practical components. Internal standards are assessed with portfolios of evidence and written reports. There is an external standard assessed by NZQA in November.

A student will be withdrawn from a standard if the teacher is not confident that the achievement of the standard is within the reach of the student or there is no evidence of the student attempting the assessment.

Course Overview

Term 1
90959 - Demonstrate knowledge of practices and strategies to address food handling issues.
This standard involves both a practical and written assessment which will take place in week 8-9 of term one.

Term 2
90956 - Demonstrate knowledge of an individual's nutritional needs
This standard looks at the nutritional needs of teenagers - what nutrients are and why they are needed. The information learnt in this standard flows into the external.

Term 3
90958 - Demonstrate understanding of how cultural practices influence eating patterns in New Zealand
This standard involves students selecting a culture to research and use to complete the written task - this involves how your chosen culture influences eating patterns in NZ. This standard also involves a practical cookery component of food from around the world.

Term 4
90961- Demonstrate understanding of how packaging information influences an individual's food choices and well-being
This is an EXTERNALLY assessed standard which looks at nutritional information and packaging in relation to well-being.

It is recommended that students attend at least one field trip which will incur a cost for transport.
It is recommended students purchase ($25) Level 1 Home Economics Learning Workbook.
Laptop is recommended.
