NCEA Level 1 Physical Education

Course Description

hysical Education invites ākonga to engage with how movement affects them, those around them, and their wider communities. Ākonga recognise and understand the challenges which affect participation in movement, and respond to any movement barriers with full and active participation. Through their learning journey in Physical Education, ākonga will develop and refine their understanding of what it means to be physically educated and promote physical education throughout their lives.


Ākonga selecting Level 1 Physical Education will be working at Curriculum level 6 and will participate in the following; 

  • Develop movement skills and strategies that are responsive to external cues

  • Develop capabilities and explore strategies to promote kohtahitanga

  • Understand te ao Maori influences on the moving body

  • Understand a range of biophysical principles

  • Reflect on how places and spaces influence movement with reference to te taiao

  • Recognise that the body holds unique significance and tapu, must be protected and nurtured through movement.

  • Make meaning from how movement may influence hauora 

  • Manage self in challenging movement contexts

  • Understand that sociocultural factors influence the moving body

  • Apply an understanding of tikanga 



Recommended Prior Learning

Recommendation by your Year 10 Physical Education teacher. A high level of participation and achievement from Year 10 is essential.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

It is recommended that students purchase the Year 11 PE workbook $10.00.
