NCEA Level 1 Dance

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs N. Quinn.

The Year 11 dance programme is optional and is available to all Year 11 students who express an interest in dance. The course includes:

  • Dance elements – in conjunction with Choreographic Devices (both are key components of NCEA dance).
  • Dance composition and choreography – developing group, solo and duet work.
  • Performance skills
  • Dance analysis – Examining how choreographers create dance works that communicate ideas.
  • Students who are already participating in dance, whether private/extra-curricular, Kapa Haka or Pasifika group, will have an individual learning plan to enhance their prior learning and experience. There is no audition process to enter this course.

In taking this class, students will develop their understanding of choreographic and performance practices and will be able to articulate how practitioners create movement to communicate ideas. There will be numerous performance opportunities including in-school showcases, Dance NZ Made, and other dance festivals.

This course will examine how to develop movement around the concepts of whanaungatanga, culture, and local landscapes. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to choreograph and perform in a variety of genres, including hip hop, kapa haka, and contemporary. There will be chances for students in this course to explore themes that relate to their own interests and experiences.

This course will include written and reflective components.

A student will be withdrawn from a standard if the teacher is not confident that the achievement of the standard is within the reach of the student or there is no evidence of the student attempting the assessment.
