NCEA Level 3 Engineering and Automotive

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr S. Fowler.

This course caters for students interested in a future career in the engineering and/or the automotive industry. Students are able to earn nationally recognised unit standards and/or Level 3 achievement standards, while completing projects that involve a range of different practical skills. Students will have the opportunity to design and build a motor bike (or a similarly complex project) .

Achievement Standards within this course are university accredited. The major objectives of learning for this course are centered around: planning and production of a metal fabricated product with automotive mechanical aspect, theory and practical experience in metal fabrication and welding, a study of complex procedures (how machinery is set up to assist the manufacture of a product), and largely around the production of the product, workshop fabrication.

A student will be withdrawn from a standard if the teacher is not confident that the achievement of the standard is within the reach of the student or there is no evidence of the student attempting the assessment.

Course Overview

Term 1
Establish what the project will be for the year. Set up a system for project management.
Start construction and record progress on related complex procedures assessment
Investigate the use of a complex machine and complete the related assessment report.

Term 2
Continue with construction of chosen project.
Keep an up to date account of progress on project management system.
Establish the prototype aspect of the project and start developing the idea.

Term 3
Continue with construction of chosen project.
Keep an up to date account of progress on project management system.
Complete project before the end of term 3.
Submit complex producers document.
Submit project management record.
Submit prototype development documents

Term 4
All practical work presented for assessment at the end of week 1 - Term 4
All assessment documentation submitted week 2 - Term 4

Recommended Prior Learning

NCEA Levels 1 and 2 technology is an advantage.
NCEA Level 2 Unit Standard 32052 amd 32055 is an advantage

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Subject charges will be supported by STAR funding. Students are expected to provide all materials for individual projects. Students choosing to construct a motor GP bike or a go kart, please note the cost is approximately $400 for the minibike or kart kit and $700 for the larger 70cc motor bike.

Pathway

This course naturally leads into further study in engineering, apprenticeships in various trades and university study.
