NCEA Level 1 Health
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mrs H. Axtens.
Course Overview
Term 1
In term 1 we introduce the underlying concepts and big ideas that are the foundation for Health. We will look at health models used in Aotearoa and apply these in a mental health context. The class will look at mental stress as key topic, and investigate and take part in strategies to manage stress. This will lead into our first internal assessment.
Term 2
This term centers around relationship and sexuality education. We will unpack personal, interpersonal and societal influences on sexuality and investigate strategies to promote positive sexuality. Using this context, we practice the use of decision-making models. For assessment, we then apply decision-making models to RSE scenarios.
Term 3
Term 3 uses the context of food and nutrition to unpack personal, interpersonal and societal influences on food choices. We look at how cultural values and how these can impact the way we eat. This will end with cooking to share food with our classmates.
Term 4
In the final term, we prepare for the external assessment by practicing the skills from the past 3 terms. Our focus is on academic reading and writing, using scenarios from mental health, relationship and sexuality education and food and nutrition contexts.
