NCEA Level 3 Design and Visual Communication

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr R. Forrest.

The course is designed to provide a variety of realistic design and drawing experiences that are challenging, creative and enjoyable. These experiences draw on students’ interests and cultural backgrounds. Students have extensive access to computer aided design (CAD) and are encouraged to use this throughout their projects.
This course is intended for students interested in design as a means to develop their own visual communication skills and particularly as an intended pathway towards further tertiary study and careers in engineering, product design, interior design and architecture.
The course is a full achievement standard course and is a combination of internal and external achievement standards.

A student will be withdrawn from a standard if the teacher is not confident that the achievement of the standard is within the reach of the student or there is no evidence of the student attempting the assessment.


Course Overview

Term 1
Focuses on exploration of design ideas relating for either a Spatial design project.
AS 91628 'Resolve a Spatial design through graphics practice'

Term 2
AS 91630 'Resolve a Product design through graphics practice'

Term 3
Produce Working drawings for either Spatial or Product Design
Develop a visual presentation that exhibits a design outcome to an audience (Optional)

Term 4
Compile portfolio for external assessments

Recommended Prior Learning

It is preferable for a student to have taken this subject in Years 11 and 12.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

A3 visual diary, 1x A3 Clearfile

Students must supply their own rendering materials (pencils, colouring pencils marker pens) as well as a compass.
It is recommended that students pay the subject charge $25. This covers the cost of all take home materials used in this course (Limited 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC milling for the production of prototypes) and any colour printing costs.

Pathway

The course is intended for students interested in developing their skills in either product design, interior design, engineering or architecture. Leads to a variety of tertiary courses or directly into the workforce.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

This course is eligible for subject endorsement.
