NCEA Level 2 Physics
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Mrs L. Brown.
This is a general Level 2 NCEA physics course for students intending to work or study in a physics-related field such as engineering, architecture, games design, radiotherapy, medicine, military training.
Students who are taking this course will need to be continuing with Maths and have a good knowledge of Trigonometry and Algebra.
The level 2 physics course could include:
- mechanics – linear and circular motion, forces, energy, torque.
- waves – lenses and mirrors, sound and light, the electromagnetic spectrum, reflection, refraction.
- modern Physics - Atomic and Nuclear Physics.
- physics in context.
- practical investigation .
All achievement standards are based on student interest and may change with general classroom consensus.
All students will be expected to complete an external exam and purchase a course manual.
A student will be withdrawn from a standard if the teacher is not confident that the achievement of the standard is within the reach of the student or there is no evidence of the student attempting the assessment.
Course Overview
Term 1
91172 - Demonstrate understanding of atomic and nuclear physics
91169 - Demonstrate understanding of physics relevant to a selected context
This is a combined internal assessment.
91171 - Demonstrate understanding of mechanics
This is an externally assessed standard.
Term 2
91168 Carry out a practical physics investigation that leads to a non-linear mathematical relationship
This will be internally assessed over 3 consecutive lessons.
Completion of 91171 - Demonstrate understanding of mechanics
Term 3
91170 Demonstrate understanding of waves
This is an externally assessed standard
Term 4
Exam preparation - revision and exam skills.
Possible further assessment opportunities.
Recommended Prior Learning
Achieve in three standards in any level 1 Science course (e.g. Science, Biochemistry, physical science and Earth Science, Agriculture/Horticultures), including passing one external standard at the achieved level, PLUS be enrolled for either 12MA1 or 12MA2 AND either 12EN1 or 12EN2.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
1B8 punched or computer, pencil, 30cm ruler, blue & black pens, highlighter and a scientific calculator is required for this course.
It is recommended that students purchase a SCIPAD workbook at approximately $20.00 per book.
Field Trips: These may be discussed and planned throughout the year as appropriate.
