12HAK

NCEA Level 2 Maori Performing Arts (Te Ao Haka)

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr G. Rameka.

The Year 12 course expands and extends the knowledge and ability of Māori performing arts and includes Mooteatea, Waiata-ā-ringa, Haka and Whakaraka (hand games). Students will be required to perform in some assessments. It is strongly recommended that students are members of the college kapa haka group to enhance their performance ability.

A student will be withdrawn from a standard if the teacher is not confident that the achievement of the standard is within the reach of the student or there is no evidence of the student attempting the assessment.

Recommended Prior Learning

Te Reo Maori is a recommended additional subject as this course is taught and administered in Te Reo Maori for a considerable portion of the time.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

It is recommended students pay approximately $20 fee for one wānanga (overnight stay on school marae) per
term. It is beneficial for students on this course to be part of the school kapa haka group. The foundation skills that are taught are the same as for Māori Performing Arts.

Pathway

Level 2 MPA is the course where you delve deeper into the historical backgrounds of Maori Performing Arts, you will research deeper into what is Moteatea, Waiata a ringa and haka. You will explore and explain compositions and creative processes. You will improve as a performer. Tjhis is the backbone of your learning.

For all standards, the initial focus is on the theoretical aspects of the topic, This is then moved into the practical elements with an assessment set at an agreed time/date. There no individual "practical" assessments; they are conducted as a group.
