NCEA Level 3 Drama
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Ms V. Gowdy.
The Year 13 course expands and extends students’ knowledge of drama and prepares them for tertiary study in many disciplines. For example, the course prepares them for any performing arts course, broadcasting school, public relations course, film or literary study, communications courses, etc. It enhances individual confidence, communication and organisational skills, time management and people management skills.
Students will also take part in the public Year 13 performance assessment evening.
Field trips:
- Theatre visit.
- Professional workshops.
- Drama Camp (prior to the public performance).
A student will be withdrawn from a standard if the teacher is not confident that the achievement of the standard is within the reach of the student or there is no evidence of the student attempting the assessment.

Term 1
Final Week of term - 3.1 - AS91512 v.2 - Interpret scripted text to integrate drama techniques in performance (4 credits) (U.E)
Term 2
Week 7 weekend - DRAMA CAMP = Thursday night 3:30 - 8:30pm, Friday out of class and Saturday 10-6pm ... and
Week 8 Sunday (16Aug) & Monday (17Aug) night performances - AS91517 Drama 3.6 - Perform a substantial acting role in a significant production (5 credits) (U.E)
Term 3
Week 8 - AS91513 Drama 3.2 - Devise and perform a drama to realise a concept (5 credits) (U.E)
OPTIONAL standard (APPROVAL from TIC of drama required - VGo):
Second Monday of term 3 - AS91520 Drama 3.9 - Direct a drama performance (5 credits) (U.E.)
Week 10 - Derived grade exams for 3.3 and 3.7
Term 4
Preparation for external exams:
* 3.3 - AS91514 - Interpret a text from a prescribed playwright to demonstrate knowledge of a theatre form or period (4 credits) (U.E)
* 3.7 - AS91518 - Demonstrate understanding of live drama performance (4 credits) (U.E)
Recommended Prior Learning
NCEA Level 2 Drama, 12 credits (including the public performance standard) or by audition.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
Extra costs may be incurred for travel to theatre trips.
Obligatory rehearsal time will need to take place outside of school hours (for 91517 - public performance).
NCEA Level 2 performance standard 91218 required, or by audition.
1B5 exercise book.
A laptop or similar device is recommended.
Pathway
DRAMA adds TRANSFERABLE SKILLS to ALL CAREER PATHWAYS.
Among many other things, students will learn to PERFORM under PRESSURE, work IN A GROUP to achieve practical goals and SUPPORT OTHERS in the group to achieve at the same time.
Students learn to OBSERVE and ANALYZE people and the world around them in order to learn from their stories.
Drama creation operates in the HIGHER THINKING ORDER SKILL LEVELS (Blooms Taxonomy) and students are required to learn CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING and TIME MANAGEMENT skills in every lesson

Only students engaged in learning and achievement derived from Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are eligible to be awarded these subjects as part of the requirement for 14 credits in each of three subjects.
